Help & Support
Everything you want to know about the Cherbourg to Rosslare ferry crossing, from crossing times to pet travel.
The crossing
The crossing takes approximately 18 hours. It's an overnight sailing, so most passengers book a cabin and sleep through the majority of the journey. The fastest crossing is around 16 hours, depending on weather conditions and the vessel.
Brittany Ferries operates daily sailings, 7 days a week, year-round. There is typically one departure per day in each direction. Check the timetable for specific departure times, as these can vary by season.
Yes. A valid passport is required for all passengers travelling between Ireland and France. This applies to Irish, British, EU, and non-EU citizens alike. National ID cards are not accepted for Irish or UK citizens on this route.
No. This is one of the key advantages of the Cherbourg–Rosslare route. Because you sail directly between Ireland and France, you bypass the UK entirely. There are no UK border checks, no landbridge complications, and no transit visas to worry about. It's a direct Ireland-to-EU crossing.
Booking & prices
Fares start from €42 per person for foot passengers. To get the best price, book as early as possible and travel during off-peak periods (midweek, outside school holidays). Prices vary depending on your vehicle type, cabin selection, and travel dates.
Children aged 0–3 travel free. Children aged 4–15 receive a 50% discount on the adult fare. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Amendment and cancellation policies depend on the fare type and the booking platform. If you booked through Brittany Ferries directly, check their terms at brittany-ferries.ie or call 021 427 7801. If you booked through DirectFerries, check your booking confirmation for their specific policy.
Vehicles & travel
Yes. Cars, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, and motorcycles are all welcome on board. Vehicle dimensions and weight limits may vary by vessel. Enter your vehicle details when booking to get an accurate price and confirm your vehicle can be accommodated.
Foot passengers are accepted on select sailings. Not all departures carry foot passengers, so check availability when booking. Foot passengers board via a separate walkway at the terminal.
Yes. Dogs and cats are welcome on board. You'll need to book a kennel in advance, as pets are not permitted in passenger areas or cabins. Your pet must have a valid EU pet passport with an up-to-date rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel) and be microchipped. Tapeworm treatment is required for travel into Ireland. Arrive at the port 90 minutes before departure if travelling with pets.
The route offers daily freight service for hauliers. Accompanied and unaccompanied trailers are carried. Freight check-in closes 2 hours before departure. For freight bookings, contact Brittany Ferries freight division directly or visit the freight booking page on this site.
On board
A cabin is strongly recommended. This is an 18-hour overnight crossing, and having a private cabin with a bed and en-suite bathroom makes the journey much more comfortable. Reclining seat options may be available, but cabins fill quickly — book early for the best selection.
Yes. All ships have a restaurant, bar, and self-service café. The Galicia features a tapas restaurant. Food service is available for the duration of the crossing, including breakfast before arrival. You can also bring your own food and drinks on board.
Wi-Fi is available on most ships, though coverage and speed may be limited when you're far from shore in the middle of the Celtic Sea. It's fine for messaging and email, but don't rely on it for streaming or large downloads.
Accessible cabins are available on most vessels, with wider doorways and adapted bathrooms. Lifts connect the vehicle deck to passenger decks. If you have specific accessibility needs, contact Brittany Ferries in advance to ensure your requirements can be met. The booking team can arrange assistance at both ports.
